Children’s privacy notice
Our notice to parents and guardians about the I Wrote That Book app, under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Effective October 28, 2026.
The app isn’t available yet. This notice describes how it will handle children’s information when it opens. We’ll update it, and its date, before the app launches.
Who we are
I Wrote That Book makes an app in which children make picture books from their own drawings and words, and a parent or guardian orders them as printed books. Write to us about children’s privacy at [email protected].
We ask a parent first
Before a child can scan a page or add words, a parent or guardian creates the account and gives consent. We collect nothing from a child before that consent.
What we collect from a child, and why
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| A first name or nickname, and an age band if the parent gives one | To put “by” and their name on the cover, and to size the words for young readers |
| Photos of their drawings | To make the book’s pages. The app keeps only the straightened page; the original photo is deleted after 30 days. |
| The words they type or say for each page, and the book’s title | To print them in the book |
| Ideas they ask “Help me write” for, and the suggestions it gave | To show suggestions, and so our team can review them with the book |
We never ask a child for a last name, birthday, photo of themselves, email address, phone number or location. We don’t collect more than a child needs to make their book.
What we don’t do
- No ads, no analytics or tracking tools, and no third-party software that collects data in the app.
- No public pages: books are private. A parent can make a private share link.
- We don’t sell or rent children’s information, and we don’t use it for advertising.
Who sees it
- The parent or guardian who owns the account.
- People on our team, who check every book before it prints, for safety and print quality.
- Our printer, which receives the finished book file and the grown-up’s shipping address to print and ship the book. The file carries no personal details beyond what’s printed in the book.
- Our service providers that host the app and its files, under contracts that limit their use to running our service.
AI help
“Help me write” runs only when a child asks for ideas. A child’s idea is sent to our AI model, which during our beta runs on our own servers, not a third-party AI service. Every suggestion passes a safety check before the child sees it.
How long we keep it
- Original photos: 30 days.
- Books, their pages and words: a year from the book’s last order (or from when it was made), unless the parent keeps them longer.
- Everything is deleted sooner if the parent asks.
A parent’s rights
From the privacy center in the app’s grown-up area, a parent can review everything about their child, download it, delete it, or take back consent, which stops any further collection. A parent can also write to [email protected]. We’ll never ask a child for more information than they need to make a book as a condition of using the app.
